IDL Amazons Champion Campaign Against Underage Alcohol Consumption Among Students

In a proactive move to address the growing concern of underage alcohol consumption among young people, female employees of Intercontinental Distillers Limited (IDL), popularly known as the IDL Amazons, have launched a school-based awareness campaign aimed at educating students about the dangers associated with alcohol abuse.

The initiative, which took place at Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State, formed part of the organisation’s activities marking this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration. Through the programme, the IDL Amazons engaged hundreds of students in meaningful discussions about responsible choices, personal development, and the importance of prioritising education and future ambitions over unhealthy social influences.

The awareness campaign was designed not only to inform students about the risks of alcohol consumption at a young age but also to inspire them to pursue their dreams with discipline, focus, and confidence

Speaking during the event, the Human Resources Manager of Intercontinental Distillers Limited and Team Lead of IDL Amazons, Mrs. Bertina Bamgbose, emphasized that the initiative aligns strongly with the spirit of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain.”

According to her, empowering teenagers with the right knowledge and guidance is a vital step toward building a healthier and more responsible generation.

She explained that young people today are exposed to increasing social pressures, which sometimes make alcohol or drug use appear fashionable or socially acceptable. However, she stressed that such perceptions can derail promising futures if not addressed through early education and awareness.

Mrs. Bamgbose further noted that the programme was intentionally organised within the host community where the company operates, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of young people and contributing positively to societal development.

“Our students are valuable members of society and the future leaders of tomorrow. It is therefore our collective responsibility to guide them and help them understand the importance of making responsible choices,” she stated.

The IDL Amazons assured participants that the initiative will not be a one-off event. Mrs. Bamgbose revealed that hundreds of students have already benefited from the campaign, adding that the team plans to expand the programme to more schools across Ogun State.

She disclosed that the organisation is working towards collaborating with the Ogun State Ministry of Education to extend the reach of the campaign, ensuring that more students receive the necessary education about responsible behaviour and the dangers of substance abuse.

Adding a professional perspective to the campaign, psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Elegbede addressed the students on the psychological and health implications of drug and alcohol abuse.

She encouraged the students to remain focused on their academic pursuits and life ambitions, emphasizing that their future potential is far greater than any temporary pleasure substances may offer.

Dr. Elegbede warned that underage alcohol consumption can have serious consequences, including liver damage, impaired brain development, and long-term health complications.

According to her, maturity and proper understanding are essential before anyone can responsibly handle alcohol consumption.

“Your future is too bright to be clouded by drugs or alcohol. Protect your health, protect your dreams, and make choices that will help you achieve your goals,” she advised.

The event left a strong impression on the students, many of whom described the programme as both enlightening and inspiring.

Several participants expressed appreciation to the organisers for taking the time to engage them in discussions that directly impact their wellbeing and future aspirations.

For many of the students, the campaign served as a powerful reminder that success is built on discipline, education, and positive decision-making.

Through the IDL Amazons initiative, Intercontinental Distillers Limited continues to demonstrate that corporate organisations can play a vital role in shaping responsible communities.

By investing in awareness and youth education, the organisation is not only addressing a critical social challenge but also contributing to the development of a healthier and more informed generation.

Indeed, the campaign stands as a shining example of how corporate social responsibility, when combined with genuine commitment, can create meaningful and lasting impact in society.
