As the world marked the International Day for Democracy, Hon. Kolawole Lawal MobOlorunduro-klm PhD, has urged governments and nations across the globe to deepen their commitment to democratic values and ensure its sustainability.
Hon. Lawal, a distinguished politician and Member of the House of Representatives for Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency in the 9th National Assembly (2019–2023), emphasized that strengthening and consolidating democracy requires collective responsibility—especially in Nigeria.
The International Day of Democracy, observed annually on 15 September, was established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 2007 to encourage governments to broaden the practice of democracy and ensure inclusiveness.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon. Lawal noted the increasing interest of Nigerians in democratic participation and called on governments at all levels to ensure citizens fully enjoy the benefits of democracy.
“Our people must see and feel the dividends of democracy to strengthen their trust and encourage greater participation,” he said.
He further stressed the need for government to create platforms and enabling environments that promote citizen engagement and allow people to shape their societies. According to him, democracy thrives only when the rights and interests of the people are adequately protected.
Highlighting economic priorities, Hon. Lawal advocated for massive investments in infrastructure and economic development with direct positive impact on citizens.
“Only through meaningful development can we guarantee the sustainability of our democracy, secure the loyalty of our people, and safeguard our collective future,” he added.
