Date: Monday, 28th July, 2025
Venue: Public Complaints Commission, Ogun State Office

On Monday, 28th July, 2025, the Ogun State Office of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) had the honour of receiving globally renowned Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on a courtesy visit. The event was marked by insightful engagements, a reaffirmation of public trust in the Commission and a renewed commitment to service delivery and social justice.

The visit commenced with the formal introduction of the management team of the Commission, after which the Honorable Federal Commissioner, Hon. Morakinyo OgoOluwa Akinleye, delivered a welcome address.

The Honourable Commissioner warmly welcomed Prof. Wole Soyinka and expressed appreciation for the rare honour of his presence at the Commission. In his remarks, the Hon. Commissioner warmly welcomed Prof. Wole Soyinka and expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as a significant honour and a strong validation of the Commission’s ongoing efforts.

He gave a comprehensive overview of the Public Complaints Commission’s work in Ogun State since his assumption of office. He explained that the Public Complaints Commission exists primarily to serve the underdogs, the voiceless and those who cannot afford legal representation, offering them a platform to seek justice without fear or cost. According to him, the Commission remains committed to defending the rights of the common man and ensuring that public institutions and officials are held accountable.

He highlighted the following key achievements and developments:

  • Courtesy visits to key stakeholders and notable traditional rulers across the state to strengthen institutional partnerships.
  • The immense cooperation and support from staff, which has significantly contributed to the progress recorded so far.
  • Reorganization of the State Office to enable a smooth implementation of new initiatives, towards repositioning the Office.
  • Ongoing efforts to establish a permanent site for the Commission’s operations, as the office currently operates from scattered locations within the Federal Secretariat complex.
  • Commencement of the digitalization of the complaint management system, aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility.
  • Engagement with Area Offices to enhance their functionality, including collaborations with local stakeholders for infrastructure upgrades, given that all PCC services remain free to the public.
  • Formal requests to Local Government Councils without existing PCC presence to provide office spaces; notable among them is Yewa North, which has granted space at Yewa.
  • Emphasis on discipline and infrastructural improvements, which have contributed to an increase in the number of complaints received by the Commission.

The Commissioner also highlighted the strong collaboration with paramount traditional rulers, noting that in some cases, their involvement greatly aids in dispute resolution. He mentioned a current case that will soon be resolved at the Alake’s Palace, a testament to the synergy between traditional and statutory institutions.

He concluded by thanking Prof. Soyinka for the visit, describing it as an endorsement of the Commission’s commitment to justice, transparency and public accountability.

Prof. Wole Soyinka, widely regarded as a one-man Ombudsman for his consistent advocacy for justice, transparency and the rights of ordinary citizens, congratulated the Commissioner and his team for their proactive and people-focused approach to public service.

He underscored the importance of the Commission as a voice for the voiceless, particularly for those who cannot afford legal representation or navigate the formal justice system. According to him, institutions like the Public Complaints Commission serve as a vital alternative for redress in a society where many feel disenfranchised or intimidated.

In a strong show of confidence, Prof. Soyinka presented a folder containing complaints from members of the public, expressing his belief that the Commission would handle each case with professionalism, fairness, and integrity. He further commended the Commission for maintaining public trust and encouraged the team to remain impartial, responsive, and accessible to all.

The Commissioner further reiterated that the services of the Public Complaints Commission, Ogun State are available not only to indigenes of Ogun State, but to all residents, regardless of origin, reflecting the Commission’s inclusive approach to public service.
