Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Emaimo, Unveils Bold Vision for World-Class Healthcare Education During Landmark Press Briefing and Facility Tour
The Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu (FUAHSE), has taken a bold step into Nigeria’s educational and healthcare future, unveiling an ambitious vision to become a leading centre for healthcare innovation, research, and manpower development in Africa.
At a landmark press briefing and facility tour attended by journalists, stakeholders, management staff, and invited guests, the university showcased not only its growing infrastructure and academic strength but also its determination to redefine allied health education in Nigeria.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Emaimo, described FUAHSE as a transformative institution born out of a national need to strengthen healthcare delivery through quality education, innovation, and practical training.
According to him, the institution’s journey represents more than seven decades of growth and evolution — from a modest diploma-awarding dental college into a specialized federal university dedicated to producing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Professor Emaimo explained that the university’s establishment in 2023 followed Presidential approval and a strategic directive aimed at expanding Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and addressing critical shortages in the medical and allied health sectors.
“This institution is not just another university,” he noted. “It is a national response to the urgent need for highly skilled healthcare professionals who can compete globally and provide quality care locally.”
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has already approved sixteen core academic programmes for the institution, cutting across Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Public Health, Allied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology.
The programmes include Nursing Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Dental Technology, Public Health, Biomedical Engineering, and other critical healthcare disciplines designed to meet modern medical demands.
In what many observers described as a visionary leap into the future, FUAHSE has also secured approval for eleven additional innovative programmes, including Biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering — disciplines expected to drive healthcare technology and digital transformation in Nigeria’s medical sector.
Professor Emaimo emphasized that the university’s academic philosophy goes beyond classroom learning, focusing heavily on practical exposure, innovation, research, and industry-driven training capable of producing graduates who are competent, compassionate, and solution-oriented.
“Our goal is to produce professionals who can move confidently from the classroom into real healthcare environments with the knowledge, skills, and character needed to make meaningful impact,” he stated.
To support this vision, the university is investing massively in infrastructure development. Ongoing projects within the campus include a modern 1,000-seat auditorium, a state-of-the-art library, and an advanced ICT complex expected to strengthen digital learning, innovation, and research excellence.
Despite acknowledging the realities and challenges associated with building a new institution — particularly in funding and infrastructure expansion — the Vice Chancellor maintained that FUAHSE remains unwavering in its pursuit of excellence.
He stressed that the university aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s broader healthcare agenda of expanding and strengthening the nation’s medical workforce while improving access to quality healthcare services.
Describing the press tour as both symbolic and strategic, Professor Emaimo said it offered the public an opportunity to witness firsthand the remarkable progress being made by the institution and its determination to become a beacon of healthcare education in Africa.
The visit also served as a precursor to the university’s second matriculation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, where another set of students will formally begin their academic journey at the institution.
“With the support of stakeholders, the media, and the Nigerian people, FUAHSE is poised to shape a healthier future through innovation, quality education, research, and purposeful leadership,” the Vice Chancellor declared.
The event concluded with an extensive guided tour of the university’s facilities and ongoing development projects, leaving guests with a strong impression that FUAHSE is steadily rising as one of Nigeria’s most promising specialized institutions — a university where legacy is evolving into leadership, and where the future of healthcare education is already taking shape.
