As INEC’s reported exclusion rocks the Ogun PDP, questions emerge over Adebutu’s political judgement, experience and failure to read the handwriting on the wall.
The political future of Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, popularly known as Ladi Adebutu, has come under intense scrutiny following reports of his exclusion, alongside his running mate, from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) final list of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
The development has dealt a potential blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had positioned Adebutu as its principal contender against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The controversy, reportedly linked to issues surrounding the party’s membership register, has raised questions about the opposition’s preparedness and internal coordination ahead of the election.
Although Adebutu maintains that he is a legitimate PDP member and has challenged the circumstances surrounding his exclusion, the unfolding situation presents a fundamental question: should he blame others for his predicament without first examining his own political decisions?
Adebutu is not a political newcomer. Having served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing his federal constituency, he should understand the complexities of Nigeria’s political system, the importance of party structures and the consequences of unresolved electoral requirements.
His experience in the National Assembly should have equipped him with sufficient knowledge to appreciate that political ambition requires more than financial resources, popularity and influential connections. It demands foresight, careful planning and the ability to recognise warning signs before they develop into major obstacles.
Adebutu should have read the handwriting on the wall. If there were indications that his eligibility, membership records or other requirements could become contentious, the prudent course would have been to address the issues early rather than allow them to threaten his ambition at a critical moment.
He should have assessed the political situation objectively and considered whether proceeding with his ambition was strategically advisable under the circumstances.
This does not mean that Adebutu should surrender his legal rights or refrain from challenging a decision he considers unjust. However, pursuing justice should go hand in hand with an honest assessment of his own political calculations and those of his associates.
The PDP, for its part, must also accept responsibility for examining the processes that led to the controversy. If errors or omissions occurred in the preparation or submission of membership records, the circumstances deserve an impartial investigation. A party aspiring to govern a state cannot afford to treat administrative compliance as a minor issue when its consequences could jeopardise electoral participation.
On October 29, 2026, Dr Arabambi Abayomi, Labour Party National Vice Chairman for the South-West, and Professor Awofala Awolola, an Action Alliance governorship candidate, reportedly threatened legal action over allegations concerning the PDP membership register submitted to INEC. They also called for the preservation of the original register and an investigation into claims surrounding Adebutu’s omission. These allegations require verification, and responsibility must be determined through credible evidence and appropriate legal processes.
Meanwhile, the controversy could reshape the dynamics of the 2027 governorship contest, particularly as the APC prepares for the election with Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its governorship candidate. Nevertheless, Adebutu’s reported exclusion does not automatically guarantee victory for the ruling party. The outcome will depend on several factors, including voter preferences, campaign effectiveness and decisions by the relevant authorities.
Ultimately, Adebutu must recognise that political leadership involves accountability, maturity and the wisdom to reconsider one’s position when circumstances demand it. Having occupied public office, he should understand that experience must translate into better judgement and strategic decision-making.
As of October 30, 2026, the reports reviewed have not conclusively established that INEC has restored Adebutu’s name to the final candidates’ list.
Whatever the eventual outcome, Adebutu should not automatically blame anybody for his predicament. He must examine whether the warning signs were ignored, whether his political team adequately anticipated the challenges and whether a different strategy could have prevented the present uncertainty.
In politics, ambition without foresight can become a costly gamble. Sometimes, the greatest demonstration of experience is not the determination to press forward at all costs, but the wisdom to recognise danger, reassess one’s position and make difficult decisions before it is too late.
