The four day training of AKTS staff members preparatory to the commencement of operation on the A uja Kaduna Train Services commenced on Monday, 22nd September 2025, at Idu Station, Abuja. Dr. Kayode Opeifa had earlier promised the entire staff members of AKTS that they would be trained ahead of the resumption of train operations in the AKTS corridor in line with recommendation of the in-house investigation panel.
In attendance were: Dr. Zang James (Director Corporate Planning), who held brief for the MD; Mr. Paschal Nnorli (Liaison Officer), holding brief for the Director of Human Resources; Engr. Adesegud M. Ogunade (Deputy Director CE/NE); Mr. Adediran Adedamola (Deputy Director Health and Safety); Engr. Monday Adejo (AD Mech.); Mr. Abdulasisi Mohammed (Operations Manager AKTS); and all the Heads of Departments on AKTS.
The training session began with Mr. Nnorli introducing all the dignitaries from different departments in NRC. He expressed appreciation to the MD for initiating the training, emphasizing that its essence was to refresh the staff’s capacity and inject more ideas for the efficient and effective running of train operations. He noted that learning is a continuous process, reminding staff that the rules are there for them to learn and relearn. He urged everyone to pay attention, put into practice whatever was learned, and cautioned that management would be more serious about evaluations and processes. He stressed that any offender would not be taken lightly and advised all staff to work as a team, as railway success translates to collective success.
Mr. Adediran delivered a session on safety. He emphatically explained the meaning of safety, how to identify hazards, carry out risk assessments, and apply controls. He also outlined the hierarchy of control. In his words, he emphasized that staff must take responsibility for their actions, and that such responsibility must be positive.
Engr. Ogunade trained staff on rules and specifications. He explained that in the railway sector, rules and specifications are fundamental. He noted that standard gauge was a technological improvement over narrow gauge. According to him, every department has its handbook, and staff must adhere strictly to work ethics, integrity, discipline, and the goals and objectives of the Nigerian Railway. He also highlighted the key characteristics of work ethics, including dedication, reliability, and professionalism.
Mr. Omojola assured staff members that after the training, everyone would emerge as better professionals, thereby ensuring hitch-free train operations.
Speaking on behalf of the MD, Dr. Zang James emphasized the importance of safe work practices. He admonished all staff to take their jobs seriously and announced that the next day’s training would be conducted department by department.
Mr. Nnorli further reminded AKTS staff to fully integrate themselves into the system they serve. He encouraged passion for work and noted that the system recognizes those who are committed. He posed a reflective question: “If a decision is going to be taken on a sensitive position, will my boss recommend me?” He advised staff to make improvements by stopping poor habits, starting good ones, and continuing with positive actions.
The four day training will end on Thursday 25 of September, 2025 with a refamiliarisation ride and transec ride on new instructions on the corridor involving all operations, mechanical, signal, track and security related personnel.
