The Edo/Delta Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has called for stronger intelligence sharing and coordinated operations with the Nigerian Navy to combat smuggling, strengthen maritime security and protect national revenue.
Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Dominic Ortsen, made the call during a familiarisation visit to the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Warri, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, on Monday, 26 October 2026.
Ortsen commended the Navy for its contributions to maritime security and efforts to prevent smuggling and other illicit activities. He stressed the importance of intelligence gathering, vigilance and timely information exchange, noting that these were essential to tackling evolving criminal methods and responding effectively to emerging threats.
“Effective intelligence gathering and timely information exchange are critical to strengthening our capacity to detect and respond to emerging threats,” Ortsen said, emphasising the need for sustained cooperation between both agencies. He added that the command remained committed to strengthening partnerships with sister security agencies to suppress smuggling, facilitate legitimate trade and protect national revenue.
In his response, Navy Commodore Shehu Tasiu called for deeper cooperation between the two agencies, stressing that intelligence sharing, coordinated operations and effective use of available resources were critical to tackling maritime-related crimes.
“No single agency possesses all the resources required to address the complex security challenges confronting the country,” Tasiu said, emphasising that closer collaboration would enable both agencies to maximise their capabilities, avoid duplication of efforts and achieve greater operational efficiency.
