The Akara and Pap Allegory: A Lesson in Minority Rule

In a hostel of 100 residents, a daily breakfast of Akara and Pap sparked discontent among 80% of the inhabitants. Despite their numerical superiority, they failed to unite and effect change. Instead, the 20% who favored Akara and Pap consistently had their way.

The hostel’s warden, seeking to restore order, introduced a daily voting system. Each evening, residents cast their votes for the next day’s meal. The results were telling:

  • 20 votes for Akara and Pap
  • 18 votes for Tea and bread
  • 16 votes for Egg Sauce & yam
  • 14 votes for Jollof rice
  • 12 votes for Spaghetti
  • 10 votes for Indomie
  • 10 votes for moimoi & pap

Despite the majority’s discontent, Akara and Pap emerged victorious every time. This allegory highlights a stark reality: when the majority remains silent, divided, and scattered, a minority can exploit and rule over them.

In the world of politics, this lesson is particularly poignant. It underscores the importance of unity, organization, and active participation in the democratic process. As the saying goes, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.” In this case, the minority’s vocal support for Akara and Pap ensured their preferences were consistently met.

Let this allegory serve as a wake-up call. It’s time for the majority to rise up, unite, and make their voices heard. Only then can we create a more just and equitable society, where the will of the people is truly represented.

When the majority vote is fragmented across various smaller groups, it can lead to a situation where a candidate with a dedicated, yet smaller, support base emerges victorious. This is precisely what occurred in the Akara and Pap scenario, where the 20% who favored Akara and Pap consistently had their way, despite the majority’s discontent.

The consequences of this phenomenon can be far-reaching, often resulting in a disconnect between the elected representatives and the will of the majority. To avoid such outcomes, it’s essential for the majority to recognize the importance of unity and collective action during electoral contests.
