As the AMORAN Ogun State Secretary marks another birthday, his years of service, grassroots leadership and advocacy for motorcycle operators come into focus
As family members, friends, associates, colleagues and members of the Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), Ogun State, celebrate Comrade Kamal Oluwatoyin Kelani, popularly known as K-SQUARE, on the occasion of his birthday, the celebration offers an opportunity to reflect on the journey of a grassroots union leader whose activities have remained closely connected with the welfare and organisation of motorcycle operators in Ogun State.
Comrade Kelani is the Secretary of AMORAN, Ogun State, a position that places him at the heart of the association’s administration and day-to-day coordination. Public records show that he was listed as Secretary when the Ogun State AMORAN executive was inaugurated in February 2020, alongside other principal officers of the association.
His continued service in the position has made him one of the familiar figures within AMORAN’s leadership structure and among stakeholders in Ogun State’s commercial motorcycle transportation sector.
The office of Secretary in a large grassroots organisation such as AMORAN comes with responsibilities that extend beyond administrative documentation. It involves coordination, communication, representation and engagement with members, branch leadership and other stakeholders.
Kelani has, over the years, participated in the association’s state-level activities and leadership engagements. In July 2025, for instance, he was identified as the State Secretary at an extended AMORAN State Executive Council meeting in Abeokuta attended by the state chairman, deputy chairman and branch chairmen from across the state. The meeting also focused on discipline, accountability and the establishment of a state task-force committee to address misconduct among members.
Such responsibilities place him within the leadership team responsible for maintaining order and strengthening the relationship between the association, its members and relevant government and community stakeholders.
One of the notable aspects of Kelani’s public profile has been his willingness to speak on matters affecting motorcycle operators and workers.
During the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration, Kelani publicly addressed the economic difficulties confronting Nigerian workers. He acknowledged the challenges faced by workers in meeting their daily needs and called for resilience and patience.
Importantly, he made specific reference to motorcycle operators in Ogun State, while highlighting AMORAN’s commitment to easing the burden on operators and promoting the safety of riders and their passengers.
His intervention demonstrated an understanding that commercial motorcycle riding is not simply a means of transportation but also the livelihood of thousands of people who depend on the sector to support themselves and their families.
The question of safety has remained an important issue in the commercial motorcycle sector, particularly as motorcycle operators interact daily with passengers, motorists and communities.
Under the leadership of AMORAN in Ogun State, the association has continued to engage with issues of responsible operations, security and discipline. In 2026, the state association publicly warned riders about security risks, including dangerous routes and late-night operations, while encouraging greater vigilance when carrying passengers.
As State Secretary, Kelani operates within this leadership structure and has been part of the wider AMORAN administration whose responsibilities include representing members while encouraging responsible conduct.
This balance between defending members’ interests and encouraging discipline is an important part of union leadership.
K-SQUARE’s influence is particularly evident in his grassroots orientation. AMORAN’s membership cuts across communities where motorcycle transportation provides an important means of mobility and income.
His public engagements have therefore frequently touched on issues that affect ordinary workers and operators directly—economic hardship, welfare, safety, organisation and the relationship between transport workers and government.
His approach has helped establish a public identity beyond the title of State Secretary: that of a grassroots voice who participates in conversations concerning the people he represents.
His contribution to the association has also received public recognition from AMORAN leadership.
In a 2023 birthday message, the Ogun State AMORAN leadership described Kelani as a valuable human asset to the association and commended his contributions towards its growth and development.
A subsequent birthday message in 2024 similarly described him as a steadfast pillar and driving force behind the association’s activities, particularly highlighting his commitment to the growth of AMORAN, the welfare of members and the representation of their interests.
These public commendations provide an indication of the regard in which his colleagues have held his contribution to the association.
MORE THAN A TITLE
Leadership is often measured not merely by the position occupied but by the responsibilities carried and the people represented.
For Comrade Kamal Oluwatoyin Kelani, the position of State Secretary has provided a platform to participate in the administration of AMORAN while giving voice to issues concerning motorcycle operators and workers.
Whether addressing the challenges confronting workers, advocating better welfare for motorcycle operators, participating in union administration or engaging on matters of safety and responsible operations, his public activities have consistently reflected the responsibilities associated with his position.
CELEBRATING K-SQUARE
As he marks another year today, the birthday celebration of Comrade Kamal Oluwatoyin Kelani is therefore also a celebration of years of service, commitment and grassroots engagement.
