A new chapter has opened at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, as Dr. Joseph Bankole Filani formally assumed office as the institution’s seventh substantive Provost.
Filani’s assumption of office took place on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a colourful handover ceremony attended by dignitaries, members of the Governing Council, management, staff, students and other stakeholders within and outside the college.
The ceremony, held at the Provost’s Office and the College Quadrangle, marked the conclusion of the tenure of the sixth Provost, Dr. R. A. Soyele, and the commencement of Filani’s administration.
The event began with the arrival of invited guests and the Provost-designate, Dr. Filani, and his wife. They were accorded a ceremonial welcome, including the inspection of the Guards of Honour.
Proceedings commenced with the National Anthem, an opening prayer by Mr. Lawal, formal introductions and a briefing by the Registrar, Mr. O. O. Tonade.
In his remarks, Tonade explained that the appointment followed a transparent and competitive selection process which commenced approximately six months earlier.
According to him, 14 applications were received, while nine candidates were shortlisted in accordance with Federal Government guidelines before the final selection of Filani.
The outgoing Provost, Dr. Soyele, expressed gratitude to God, his family, members of the College community, past Provosts, the Governing Council and Management for their support throughout his tenure.
Describing the handover as a “defining moment,” Soyele reflected on his years of leadership and service to the institution, urging staff and students to continue to uphold the rules and regulations governing the college.
He emphasised the importance of peace, discipline and commitment to institutional progress, noting that effective leadership depends on the collective responsibility of all members of the academic community.
As part of the activities marking the occasion, the Department of Fine and Applied Arts presented a portrait to the new Provost as a symbolic gesture of welcome.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the formal signing of the handover notes by the outgoing and incoming Provosts, signifying the official transfer of authority and responsibility.
Filani subsequently delivered his acceptance speech, after which special prayers were offered for his administration under the leadership of Rev. Koya.
The ceremony also featured the ceremonial hoisting of the National and College flags, accompanied by a parade at the Provost’s Office Quadrangle.
Among those who witnessed the occasion were the Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr. Akinyele; the Registrar; Bursar; College Librarian; members of the Governing Council; Deans; Directors; union leaders; the Dean of Students; and other senior officials and stakeholders.
The event ended with the departure of the outgoing Provost, Dr. Soyele, and his wife, Mrs. B. A. Soyele, amid applause and expressions of appreciation for their service to the institution.
With Filani now at the helm, the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta begins a new phase of administration, with expectations of continued growth, innovation, institutional development and academic excellence.
